As well as encouraging people to take part in regular exercise, this year the event will had a special focus on skin cancer awareness. In association with skin cancer charity, SKCin, all finishers received a skin cancer prevention kit!
If you were a race entrant in 2008 you can find out the individual times and positions in the race by clicking on Race Results from the menu on the left. Photographs of last years event are also available to view by clicking on the menu item on the left.
All surplus monies generated by the event, amounting to nearly £2000 in 2008, have gone to the Kenyan Orphan Project (KOP)charity no. 1077039. KOP is a charity supported in by the Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society and run by Nottingham medical students who marshall the race.
Principia Partners in Health is a social enterprise organisation which has been set up across Rushcliffe, Nottinghamshire in 2006, to deliver local healthcare services in response to the NHS reforms. This non profit-making venture brings together all the general practices across the borough working in partnership with community services and patients to provide high quality health care.
What better way to promote Principia’s philosophy of community engagement in health and well-being than to organise the ‘Principia 10k Race and Family Fun Run’?
One of the main aims of the event is promotion of good health and, in particular, to encourage Principia patients to participate in regular exercise. Health care professionals were encouraged to lead by example and take part in the race. Local doctors and nurses as well as many others, entered as individuals and as teams who competed for a trophy.
Rushcliffe Borough Council kindly agreed to make Rushcliffe Country Park available on 9th June 2007 to stage a 10k race and a Family Fun Run (FFR). The 10k race was a 2 lap race over tracks and grass, run under UK Athletics Rules. The FFR was run (or walked!) over a shorter separate course. The start area accommodated a variety of interactive health promotion displays and refreshment stalls. Additional activities were also been arranged, including a pre-race aerobic warm up and guided walks.
The event was open to all-comers (minimum 16 years for the 10k race, no age limit for the FFR). The 10k race was advertised nationally via the Runnersworld website. The entry fee for the 10 k was £9. All participants of the 10k raced receive a commemorative memento. Entry to the FFR was free to encourage maximum participation.
In addition there were two further exercise related events planned for the weekend; a pre-race sports medicine lecture and pasta supper, and a post-race ceilidh.
All surplus monies generated by the event will go to the Kenyan Orphan Project (KOP) which is the charity supported in 2007 by the Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society. This charity was set up in 2002 by a group of Nottingham University medical students with the aim of improving access to health care in Kisumu, Kenya, an area which has been devastated by AIDS. This has left many children orphaned and homeless. The project has succeeded in building a community hospital, a community health centre and a school. The Nottingham medical students currently involved with KOP agreed to help to marshal the race. The event provided KOP with the opportunity to publicise their work and raise funds.
The race and its associated activities raised just over £7000. This included £5000 raised by the sponsorship of one special runner, Richard Whitehead.
